Weblog Assignment # 7 December 3, 2008

I haven’t really thought about how I will be able to use my weblog after English 110 is over. I’m not sure if it will fit into anything that i do even though it is somewhat like myspace. Maybe later on in my nursing career I will be able to find other nurses that have a wordpress profile and we could chat on here. We could post different things that we are learning throughout the four years. Other than that there is not much use I could get out of this, it was a very fun activity though for an English class.

Coming into this class I didn’t really expect to be doing something I actually would enjoy. The Analytical Research project was very time consuming and took a lot of hard work but I think having to do something like that only makes a student be more dedicated to writing a good paper and finding good information. As far as the Digital Composition goes, that was something new for me. I had a good attitude about being able to do a project like that, because it relates to college students because I got to be on the wordpress committee which relates to myspace or facebook. The Opinion Editorial was my favorite because it was an assignment that I could actually express my feelings or thoughts and not have an exact set of rules to what I could write.

As far as rules and conventions go for a op-ed I think their quite simple. An op-ed should be informational but at the same time have an opinion/argument. It shouldnt look like the writer actually researched a topic but just know about it enough to have a strong argument with some sarcasm or wit. I found an example in New York Times. The title is “Tough Choices for Tough Children.” Its about children with A.D.H.D and the medicines being prescribed. The author writes; “So why, according to new Food and Drug Administration data on doctors’ prescribing practices, were 16 percent of the pediatric users of Risperdal over the past three years children with A.D.H.D.?” Here she is being informational but yet asking a question in her own defense showing that it is an argument.

“Rebuilding New Orleans Is Foolish”

When Hurricane Katrina hit in August 2005 it flooded 80 percent of New Orleans. People all over America were sitting in front of their televisions watching the devastation, stranded survivors on their roof tops, and people begging to be rescued. We watch as the city takes blow after blow by natural disaster and now more crime than ever and yet it’s still trying to be rebuilt in the same location, with 80 percent below sea-level. It is very possible to rebuild the city but it’s foolish. New Orleans isn’t one of those places like the Netherlands for example where it would make sense to build a sea wall and occupy land not meant for land animals. America has plenty of space to rebuild New Orleans in a slightly different location where it’s not under constant threat. I understand that New Orleans is a great city and is rich in history, but when Hurricane Katrina hit 80 percent of the city was underwater when the levee system was breached in 53 different places. In some ways I look at the destruction of New Orleans as a loss, but then I really think about it, and it’s not. The French Quarter which took up 20 percent of the city is still there and has survived this natural disaster. This is one of the main tourist attractions where people spent their time and money. The expensive levee that system that usually keeps 80 percent of the city dry is not needed to keep the French Quarter dry. The French Quarter is naturally positioned above water. One of the main points I’m trying to emphasize is that the rest of New Orleans outside of the tourist destinations were poor, shattered areas that couldn’t even support a working school system, let alone an expensive levee. Before Katrina even hit forty-seven percent of public schools in the city were rated as “academically unacceptable,” and twenty-five percent of the New Orleans’ adult population didn’t even have a high school diploma. These statistics here prove my point immensely. Another outstanding figure is that twenty-seven percent of pre-Katrina residents were living below the poverty line, which almost all of them lived below sea level. New Orleans murder rate was 10 times the national average. Now, you tell me why this city should be rebuilt? America is trying to spend so much money on this city when it really wasn’t worth much in the first place. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against poverty-stricken citizens. I just can’t see the explanation of spending billions of dollars to only allow them to live below sea level, when that money could be put to good use by rebuilding the city in a different area and allow for better lives. Rather than rebuild 80 percent of a city in an area prone to flooding, New Orleans should be rebuilt 20 miles inland.

I read this op-ed and get really upset. It’s horrible that the type of medication needed for some individuals are not available, and therefore counterfit ones are made. It’s apolling that some Americans have died from a blood thinner made in china. I think we need to make our own drugs in America because many drugs produced in foreign countries contain ingredients that are fake and harmful. It’s sad because my Grandpa had a massive heart attack this past year and he is on many medications and now im questioning whats in them.

Analytical Research Paper To An Electronic Audience November 10, 2008

For all the Analytica Research papers being written in English 110 the theme revolves around “Spaces and Places.” My paper is about New Orleans and it’s deterioration. I focused on what brought people to New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina and why it was such a major tourist attraction and then what effects Hurricane Katrina has had on the city, like more crime and depression. There are many different topics focused on by classmates. This paper is very informational but at the same time connects with a common theme.
